In a landmark development for higher education in Nigeria, Professor Ursula Ngozi Akanwa has been appointed the seventh substantive Vice-Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, becoming the first woman to lead the institution since its establishment.

Her appointment was confirmed following the university’s 95th Governing Council meeting. The announcement was made by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, who noted that the decision came after a comprehensive review of recommendations submitted by the Selection Panel set up to oversee the process.

Professor Akanwa, currently serving as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development), is scheduled to officially assume office on March 1, 2026. She will succeed the outgoing Vice-Chancellor whose tenure concludes at the end of February.

An expert in Educational Measurement and Evaluation, Professor Akanwa joined the university in 2010 as an Associate Professor. Through years of dedicated service, impactful research, and strong academic leadership, she rose to the rank of full Professor in 2014, playing a significant role in advancing scholarship and institutional development at the university.

Her emergence as Vice-Chancellor marks a significant milestone for gender inclusion in leadership, particularly within Nigeria’s agricultural university system. With her vast experience in research administration and academic development, many stakeholders believe her tenure will further strengthen the university’s commitment to innovation, research excellence, and community engagement.

As preparations begin for the official transition in March, the university community and education sector watchers alike are anticipating a new chapter of growth under her leadership.
